Title: Photographs of Lucius
Characters: Draco, Lucius, Narcissa.

Words: About 100 words each.
Challenge: Lucius.
A/N: *shifty eyes* I tried to write this as a drabble and...failed miserably. I just kind of...kept writing. So, this is an eight-part drabble. And, no, I have not broken my own rules. ;)
Draco is looking at a photograph of—
--Lucius as a boy. He runs a finger over the enchanted photo. Draco can see a striking resemblance between his father and himself when he was that age. Lucius is probably about eight years old, smiling stiffly as he is fussed over by his mother. Lucius’ father is scowling – it is the same expression Draco has seen his own father wear time and time again.
Draco smiles at the picture when the image of his father opens his mouth and speaks soundlessly; there is a gap in his teeth from where he had lost one of his baby teeth.
--Lucius as a teenager. He is tall and lanky. He is standing outside in the sunshine with his parents.
Lucius looks unhappy in this picture. He keeps shrugging away from his mother every time she dabs the handkerchief with her tongue to wipe his chin.
What strikes Draco is the way that Lucius’ father keeps glancing at him. He is saying something to Lucius; Draco can tell that it is something unpleasant by the way that the man pulls his face.
He knows this face all too well; it’s the same expression he’s seen Lucius give him time and time again.
--Lucius on his wedding day, with Narcissa.
They are both dressed very elaborately. Lucius looks striking in the traditional Malfoy groom’s garb. Narcissa looks breathtaking in her dress.
But they both look despondent, unhappy and resentful.
Lucius is scowling, just like the way his father was in the previous photos. Narcissa's face is cold and impassive. She looks bitter and resentful. They sit together on a plush sofa, posing for the photo, holding hands. But they look as though they would rather be miles away from each other.
Draco watches how his parents in the enchanted photo grimace and force a smile to their faces.
--Lucius behind Narcissa as she holds Draco as a newborn. Draco guesses that he is no more than a week old.
Draco watches the photo sadly; there is no warmth in the enchanted picture. His parents are cold and stoic. Neither of them is smiling. In fact, Lucius is scowling – that same scowl that Draco had seen Lucius’ father pull in previous pictures. It is the same scowl he has seen all his life.
Draco runs a finger over the picture and feels his heart wrenching. The coldness between his parents in the picture is all that he has only ever known.
--Lucius with Draco on his knee at Christmas time. Draco guesses that he is about seven years old in this picture – he can see a gap in his teeth where one of his milk teeth has fallen out.
Draco watches the way his father stiffly holds him on his knee. The young image of himself is squirming on Lucius’ lap, smiling nervously and eyeing the Christmas tree, which is surrounded with elaborately wrapped gifts.
Lucius’ lips move soundlessly; Draco can tell from the scowl on his face that he is berating Draco and demanding that he sit still.
--Lucius, his mother and himself on Draco’s thirteenth birthday. There is a huge cake in front of them, lit with candles and covered in flourished writing. His parents are standing on either side of him.
His mother looks as cold as ever, Lucius looks as surly as ever and Draco is sporting that very same scowl as he looks down at the cake distastefully.
Draco heaves a deep sigh as he watches the way his parents smile in a forced manner. But he simply cannot take his eyes off his own young face and the expression that he is pulling.
--Lucius, only weeks before he was captured and sent to Azkaban. He is, as always, scowling. His piercing blue eyes are cold and impassive as they dart from side to side, as though he is suspicious of something, like he is expecting someone he does not want to see to appear.
His face is lined aged. The scowl that he has worn for all those years, Draco sees, has finally etched permanently into his face. Lucius is an exact image of his father.
He runs his finger over the animated picture and thinks to himself how close he came to being exactly like his father.
--Lucius, the last time Draco ever saw him.
It is a picture of Lucius’ coffin being lowered into the ground. Draco is near the grave, tight-lipped and standing rigidly, with his mother, who is stony faced, beside him.
Draco remembers that day well – it was the first day in his life that he had felt truly free. While he had not escaped his heritage or his lineage, he no longer lived in fear of his father’s scrutiny, nor his determination to make Draco follow in his footsteps.

Draco sets the pictures down and glances up at Harry, who is watching him closely. “I never thanked you for freeing me from this, Harry,” he says softly.
