"I'm a prince!" protested Draco as Lucius scooped him up, wooden sword and all. He carried the six-year-old from the study where Lucius was practicing hazardous dark magic.

"You're a dragon," muttered Lucius as he carried his wiggling progeny to his bedroom.

"No! You're the dragon! I'm slaying you!" squealed Draco as he smacked at his father's thighs with the toy. Lucius to snatched it away from his chubby hands.

Lucius dropped Draco onto his bed. Wordlessly, he exited and hexed the door so Draco couldn't escape. After the wailing started, Lucius silenced the door and returned to his study.

Well I have a whole vault of memories that would be hard to understand for a youth that I'd come up with for CMW. It's all part of my postulation that Lucius wasn't really intentionally a bad father, he did what he believed was right.

I agree. Lucius would only be repeating what he had done to him, as that is all he would know. Purebloods, like the Malfoys, are exceptionally narrow minded because, well...their life is really all they know.

Well and in his mind he's protecting Draco from the dangerous magics he's unleashing. The silencing spell is a bit cold, but he does need to concentrate.

I also think a bit about what it must've been like to have the first couple of years of your life with your father denying involvement with DE's, and with people afraid that your father was, indeed, an evil wizard.

I can see where both of them are coming from--Lucius trying to teach Draco what is right and wrong, Draco trying to understand what he did wrong. Personally, I'm used to being told very firmly what I've done wrong. My parents raised me sort of like this, but with a more explanatory iron hand rather than just sitting me in my bedroom and locking the door.

That's the image I wanted to paint, more or less, that Lucius wasn't evil so much as perhaps thoughtless. He didn't explain it because he didn't think Draco was old enough to understand. (Even Dumbledore's been known to make that kind of mistake before.) And really... if he's lashing around dangerous magics and his son comes in... he was pretty shaken as well as angry. I saw him as being almost beyond words. But, he didn't hit him. He didn't scream. He simply sat him down and left him there.

Of couse, Draco was just lonely and wanted to play. He doesn't understand how dangerous what his father was doing was. Children are reckless and they often forget. He loves his father, he wants to play. I think the lack of explanation on things is why Draco, at Hogwarts, dismisses a good portion of his father's suggestion when it comes to not being seen as Harry's enemy. It also sets up why he's so willing to manipulate his parents for what he wants. Of course, Lucius is still his father and Draco loves him.

I just prefer this idea of a carelessly WASPish upbringing as opposed to the fanon abusive childhood. I personally don't think there's adequate evidence to support Draco as abuse victim.
