Sometimes Draco likes to sit at the fireplace, staring at the empty grate and imagining the flames that aren’t there, the way they burn the things he has that aren’t tangible.

There’s a soft hiss, the whisper of scales on wood. Karst slips along the mantle, eyes sparking gold. Draco wonders what it’s trying to tell him, if it’s trying to say anything at all.

“Yes, I know,” he says, replying to an unvoiced question. “I should stop sitting here.” Karst flicks out its tongue, staring at him.

“Or not?” Draco offers. He wonders, do snakes have anything to burn?
