Old habits die hard, and Draco still feels off-kilter when he arrives, empty-handed, at his father’s room in the Janus Thickey Ward.

“These Mudbloods,” his father is mumbling, fingers trembling as he turns the page of the Daily Prophet. Draco winces.

“Father,” he says, because he can’t go without saying something, even if it’s fruitless.

“Draco,” his father says, both scornful and indulgent at once. Draco still struggles to reconcile the two.

“I’m leaving tomorrow for a fellowship in—,” Draco begins, but his father waves him off.

“I’ll see you next year,” his father says, distracted by the next page.
