Draco gripped his wand so tightly it hurt, willing his outstretched hand to stop shaking.

He was too hot, too cold, clammy with sweat and queasy with terror. All the while, Dumbledore stood there defenceless, perfectly calm.

Draco had wasted precious minutes already, desperately bragging about his misdeeds in a voice he barely recognised.

What was he waiting for? The real Death Eaters would arrive any second: true villains who thought nothing of murder… who’d murder him if he failed tonight.

The killing curse caught in Draco’s throat.

I can’t do it.

He lowered his wand, one inch, two…
