the downside to cataloguing your books

Good thing: after starting several years ago, I finally got around to cataloguing more of my books!

A thing: I am not done the books in my bedroom and I’m already over 400. (And this is after I culled/donated a bunch of sff mass-market paperbacks a few years ago, mostly ones we’d gotten from an emptying-nester.) Some of these catalogued books are “family” books and not strictly mine but…most of them are mine.

Another thing: this was motivated by needing to double-fill shelves, so I figured I’d catalogue while reorganizing. And this way it matters less if I can see all the spines…I hope?

My Readercon Schedule!

Whew! I’ll be making my Guest of Honor run at Readercon this coming weekend in Burlington, MA! It’s me and P. Djeli Clark in the GoH seats, with legions of super-smart sf/f writers and editors on the program, including Max Gladstone, Rob Cameron, Catherine Lundoff, John Chu, Laura Antoniou, Erin Roberts, Sarah Pinsker, Shariann Lewitt and many many more.

As expected, my schedule will be PACKED. Of note: I added a second autographing slot because of concerns that the first one happens soooo early. I will not have a table selling books: you can get them in the bookshop from Sally at Larry Smith Booksellers and some will also be on the Broad Universe table.

And yes, there will be some copies of the new shiny beautiful Magic University Collectors Edition hardcover. (And if you ordered a copy via Kickstarter, check your email for an update about picking up the book in person if you want to! Or just come to a party!)

what’s the opposite of tsundoku?

With my second load of ordered danmei arriving,1 I came to the bizarre realization that after so many years I’m…buying books with the intention of…reading them? What a paradigm shift!

This isn’t quite 100% accurate, but through my life I was first in the stage of borrowing books from the library and then buying them to keep if I really liked them, then a lot of ebooks, never mind my massive fic reading numbers, and all throughout I’ve also had a strong general practice of buying select books to have for whatever reason, often with not much intention of reading them, at least not anytime soon.2

I do have rules! I’m only “allowed” to collect things that fall within certain parameters, though some of the new ones (danmei, light novels that are horror/certain others) are a bit loose and will need to be tightened up eventually. I don’t have enough space for an infinity of books. I also generally buy ebooks if I can get them DRM-free, and after that, depending on the title, I may go for an audiobook instead if it exists.)

1 These aren’t “large” publishers like 7seas that I can get via my local bookstore but rather Rosmei & Via Lactea etc. and are physical-only (somewhat limited run?) publications.
2 i.e. I somehow randomly decided to start collecting C. J. Cherryh’s sci-fi books in hardcover, and now I’m too far in.

The Heartthrob NPC in the VR Game

Still in the midst of my Cyan Wings marathon, but I'm pretty close to the end. There are only a couple older stories I haven't read yet, and I'd like to reread Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know (魔尊也想知道). Cyan Wings' writing has a way of touching my heart and making me cry.

Currently reading The Heartthrob NPC in the VR Game (全息游戏里的万人迷NPC) by Su HuaiHuang (苏怀荒). A cannon fodder NPC became self-aware and is now testing the limit of what he could do within the game engine's perimeter to hopefully save himself from certain doom. It's quite interesting so far.

This novel has multiple layers. There is the main character's battle of wits against the game engine AI, the love interest's side of the story (he's the CEO of the game company and the game engine creator), the in-game main story about the conflict between gods and demons with lots of conspiracies flying around, the players' perspective both in and out of the game, the game development team's perspective, and the live streamer side. It sounds like there are perhaps too many moving pieces floating about, but the pieces fit quite well together. My favourite part is probably the scene where the scenario writer talks about how the MC's action can be interpreted in different ways since the players aren't privy to his inner thought. (The MC is a metaphorical fox in sheep's skin, or in the tradition of Chinese internet speaks, a green tea character.)

Completely unrelated, Yofukashi no Uta got a new OP and ED by Creepy Nuts. Both the OP song and the OP credit sequence are really cool. Love the flamenco vibe.

Might try out the [community profile] sunshine_revival challenge when I have things to say.

I have been working on the challenges, all signs to the contrary, so I figured I’d better just get this post up even if it’s on my phone (always a fun experiment when there’s more formatting than usual).

I’m not really a journalling person, so it seems like I’ll be going with the creative prompts.

As always, this is also a hello post 👋

collecting words like tasty snacks: loach

Maybe it’s just me, today, but I came across the word loach (which I’m positive I’ve heard before; it’s a type of fish after all, and sounds familiar) and the word is so delicious, it makes my mouth water.

Strong contender for next year’s word of the year? I guess we’ll see.
